Reliability Training | HolisticAM

Industry: Mining Sector

Services Required: Reliability Engineering Training

Location: Papua New Guinea

Holistic Asset Management (HolisticAM) was engaged by a gold mining company –Newcrest Lihir– to upskill their site Reliability Engineers. The objective was to enhance equipment performance by developing and managing reliability engineering maintenance strategy improvements. HolisticAM mobilised a specialist reliability engineer to develop and deliver bespoke online training content for an intensive two day course.

Newcrest Lihir is a gold mine located approximately 900 km northeast of Port Morsbey in Papua New Guinea.

Approximately 4,500 people are employed at Lihir which has a combination of residential and fly-in-fly-out personnel. Around 90 per cent of employees are Papua New Guineans.

Newcrest supports PNG-based suppliers and businesses where possible, and contributes to the local economy by providing public infrastructure and services, including access to health services and the provision of electrical power and water to local villages.

THE CHALLENGE

The operation was looking to stabilise throughput at or slightly above 15Mtpa and increase its focus on lifting recovery rates to maximise overall gold production and cash flow into the future. This consistent demand on the existing assets in conjunction with disparate skills within Reliability Engineering team created the following challenges:

  • Absent or underdeveloped maintenance strategies
  • Difficulty in moving out of the reactive maintenance domain

As a result, the site needed to enhance the capability of their Reliability Engineers to develop and manage high quality maintenance strategies

THE SOLUTION

HolisticAM delivered customised online learning targeting the following core topics:

  • Reliability engineering fundamentals
  • General performance data analysis
  • Understanding the drivers of equipment failure
  • Understanding and calculating basic reliability metrics
  • Understanding and calculating asset criticality
  • Fundamentals of Failure Modes and Effects Analysis
  • Understanding progressive failure and the P-F interval
  • Fundamentals of RCM
  • Practical maintenance strategy improvement process

Participants were engaged through a series of interactive learning sessions and facilitated practical activities to ensure they developed the skills necessary to apply the knowledge as part of their day-to-day duties.

THE RESULTS

HolisticAM successfully delivered online learning for the reliability team.

THE ADDED VALUE

Holistic Asset Management provided value to the operation by:

  • Enhancing the understanding of Reliability Engineering as an applied engineering discipline
  • Explaining foundational reliability engineering measures such as asset criticality, equipment availability, and mean time between failure
  • Demonstrating and mentoring the application of fundamental FMEA and RCM skills
  • Demonstrating a systematic methodology for developing and managing maintenance strategies
  • Building confidence among participants in their individual ability to develop effective maintenance strategies
  • Customising the training content to the participants existing level of knowledge and experience
  • Delivering the training remotely, minimizing disruption to the staff roster
